Faldetta  Series
Gozitan women began wearing this national headdress or cape in 1222. It is called an
Ghonnella (
pron. oh-nella) or Faldetta. From 1876 painting by Edward Caruana Dingli.

Always in black, the headpiece is made of whalebone and there are two large finger
loops to hold the cape against the wind.  Generally made of cotton/linen, the wealthier
women used silk. I was attracted to the distinctive shape of this traditional vestment
which inspired the series below. Each painting references a unique feature of the island
of Gozo, its history and my visit there

Series of  ten watercolors.
Larger island of Malta,
tiny island of Comino and
Gozo referenced 'in the
shadow of Malta.'

Reference to the Maltese Cross
which came about during the age
of the Knights of St. John.
Colorful boats of Malta with a protective
'eye' painted on them.
Gigantic cacti grow in abundance on these
islands.A fragrant liquor called "Bijatra" is
made from the cactus fruit or prickly pear.
One of the oldest free-standing stone structures in the
world, Mnjadra is said to be 2,500 years older than the
pyramids in Egypt!  It is made of native limestone except for
what appears to be a wide ribbon of quartz at the temple
entrance. Oddly, this feature is not known to many guides
or inhabitants I spoke with, nor is it mentioned in archeology
books. Yet I find its presence striking!!!
Fishing is the staple of life on Malta and
Gozo. The Lampuki is specific to these isles.
Two natural resources of Gozo
are represented here. Perfectly
shaped blocks of limestone from
the quarries go into each and
every building. Natives have
carved out their own 'salt pans'
along the shores. They collect
seawater, allow the sun to
evaporate the water and sell the
mineral-filled salt.
